I Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
Traditionally, the CEO presided over a human and paper-intensive information system,
with verbal communications supplemented by paper records and paper flow. The job was
described as “managing”. Computer-based information systems were considered as outside
the purview of management. Early information systems, which used huge computers to
process large volumes of routine data, were run by technical specialists. Today, the CEO uses
a small personal computer with power equal to that of the early machines for marketing and
operational ‘what if’ analyses.
Further, the CEO must supervise the operation of a computerized system for ordering
and managing materials, for inventory control, for manufacturing, for automated warehousing,
electronic mail communications with the sales staff, office automation and numerous other
specialized subsystems. The job is still called “managing,” but now it requires a keen
understanding not only of the relationships between people and their functions, but also of the
relationships among the various information systems with the organization and people who
use them.
