Basically, information technologies provide organizations with two
very different kinds of opportunities: productivity gains and breakthroughs.
Productivity benefits allow the organization to work more easily,
cheaply, better and faster. Computers, for example, have eliminated2 a lot
of the routine paperwork involved in banking; as a result our accounts are 2. ก�ำจัด
processed faster and more reliably. In my own family, my wife, my daugh-
ter, my son and I all save time writing by using word processing on our
computers. We all accomplish more, leaving more time for family leisure.
Productivity benefits usually come first.
However, greater emphasis should be placed on breakthroughs
that allow an organization to transform itself to a new form, or identity, or
level of operation. Breakthroughs involve new goals, new ways of working,
and new forms of organization. They go beyond the improvement of exist-
ing methods and procedures. Because of such breakthroughs, computer
