The drive for universities to be autonomous is under heated debate at government
universities in Thailand. Some education experts believe that such a move will improve
quality and enhance competitiveness at universities, while critics only see lots of problems to
come. In my opinion, (2) .
First of all, it is obvious that students (or their parents) will have to pay more in tu-
ition fees. At present, the average fee for a government-run university is 15,000 baht per
semester. This may increase by two or three times once universities gain independent
status. The university also needs to raise funds, as it will receive less budget from the
government than in the past. This includes organizing all sort of fund-raising activities, which
will distract staff from their main teaching and research responsibilities.
