A. Listen and repeat
1. A: Would you mind if I left early today?
B: No, of course not.
2. A: I wonder if I could take this afternoon off.
B: Go ahead.
3. A: Can I leave early for lunch?
B: Of course.
4. A: May I go to the bank for a while?
B: All right.

B. Listen and repeat
1. A: Could I use your calculator?
B: I’m afraid you can’t.
2. A: Would you mind if I went out for a while?
B: I’m afraid I can’t let you go right now.
3. A: I wonder if I could arrive late tomorrow?
B: I’m afraid not.
4. A: Can I take two days off, please?
B: Sorry, but we have to check our stock tomorrow.

C. Listen and respond
Use the cue in each item to ask for permission and you will hear either a positive or

negative response. Try to use a variety of patterns you have studied for each situation.

Example
You: (leave early)
(you say: Would you mind if I left early?)
CD: No, of course not.

1. You: (arrive late on Friday)
CD: All right.
2. You: (take this afternoon off)
CD: I’m afraid you can’t.
