Passage 1

At first glance, speech seems as natural to man as walking, and it is true, of
course, that nearly all persons in every society learn both to talk and to walk. Yet if
we look more closely, we will see that the process of acquiring speech is totally
different from the process of learning to walk. Each child is biologically equipped to
make the necessary muscular and nervous adjustments that result in walking. The
values, attitudes, and customs of the society in which the child is raised are not
important factors in this process. Thus, whether a child is raised in Thailand, France,
Nigeria, or the United States, he will learn to walk in essentially the same way.

This is not true of speech, however. For though every normal person is
biologically equipped to talk, the language that he speaks will be determined by the
society in which he is raised. Language varies as we pass from one social group to
another, because it is a part of the history of each group. Each society then has its
own particular language for communicating ideas, and it has been used over a long
period of time. Thus if a child is raised in Thailand, he will speak Thai. If he is raised
in the United States, he will speak English and so on.
