(3) The girl to whom you were talking to in the hall is the director’s
daughter.

หาก relative clause มี BE เปน็ สว่ นหนึง่ ของกริยา ประโยคอาจจะสั้นลงไดด้ ว้ ยการ
ตดั BE และ relative pronoun ทเี่ ปน็ ประธานออก ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้

(4) The boy who is wearing a blue shirt is my cousin. The boy
wearing a blue shirt is my cousin.

(5) Have you seen the book that was written by my brother? Have
you seen the book written by my brother?

ค. ประโยคท่ีประกอบด้วย adverbial clause ในประโยคประเภทนี้ประธานและกริยา
ของอนุประโยคอาจตัดไปได้ ถ้าประธานเหมือนกับประธานของประโยคหลักและกริยาเป็นรูปใด
รปู หนึ่งของ BE เชน่

(1) Although he was tired, he kept on working.
Although tired, he kept on working.
(2) If they are punished, they will not cooperate.
If punished, they will not cooperate.
(3) W hile he was at the university, he was active in the dramatic society.

While at the university, he was active in the dramatic society.
ในกรณีที่อนุประโยคไม่มีกริยา BE อาจจะตัดประธานออกไปได้พร้อมกับค�ำเช่ือมและ
เปล่ยี นกรยิ าเปน็ รปู -ing ดงั ตวั อยา่ งต่อไปนี้

(4) Since the teacher did not know who was to blame, he resorted to
collective punishment.

Not knowing who was to blame, the teacher resorted to collective
punishment.

(5) When we reached the river, we pitched camp for the night.
Reaching the river, we pitched camp for the night.
