Before writing a summary, it is helpful to list the main points of the reading. Use Wh-question
(Who?, What?, When?, Where?, Why?, and How?) to help you identify these points. For
example, look at this sample list for the article “Lucky charms,”

       •	 Who?
            Psychologists, athletes and people

       •	 What?
            Good-luck charms
            No scientific proof as support

       •	 When?
            Athletes use them during games.
            People use them in uncontrollable situations.

       •	 Why?
            To help people cope emotionally in difficult situations

A. Read the summaries of Reading 1, “Lucky Charm.” Then complete the chart that follows.
Check (✓) the information that is true for each summary.
Summary 1	 “ Luck Charms” discusses why science can’t explain good-luck charms. A lot of

            people use good-luck charms in their lives, especially during important events.
            Student sometimes carry good-luck charms with them when they take test in
            school. Many of my friends believe in this superstition, but in my judgment,
            objects cannot bring you good luck. I think success comes only form working
            hard.
Summary 2	 In this article, the author explains when and why people use good-luck charms.
            Many athletes use good luck charms. Pitcher Casey Brown wears the same socks
            at every game because he associates them with good luck. Swimmer Gary Hall
            Jr. wore a good-luck robe a swimming trunks to improve his odds at the Olym-
            pics, and he won a gold medal. Chris Caruso brings a Mother’s Day card from
            her son to help bring her luck when she plays bingo.
Summary 3	 In “Lucky Charms,” the author reports that people carry lucky charms even though
            there in no conclusive evidence that they work. Some athletes carry good-luck
            charms during competitions, hoping they will help them win. Psychologists
            believe athletes, and people in general, use good-luck charms in situations that
            they can’t control. They believe lucky charms help people cope better emotion-
            ally in difficult situations.
