The changes which occur in the language spoken in one area are not neces-
sarily spread to another area. The variability of linguistic changes accounts, to a great
extent, for the early dialect splits. Within a single group of speakers who are in
regular contact with one another, the changes are spread among the group and
“relearned” by their children. When some communication barrier separates groups of
speakers be it a physical barrier like an ocean or a mountain range, or social
barriers of a political, racial, class, or religious kind linguistic changes are not
easily spread and dialectal differences are reinforced.
