connection between the letters of the alphabet and the meanings signaled by the
sound-sequences that those letters try to represent.

      For instance, the combination of letters we read as the printed word “chair”
uses five squiggles but really represents only three sounds: CH, AI, and R. Those
three sounds are symbolic, as are the letters representing the sounds (rather poorly),
since the written word “chair” or the spoken CH - AI - R direct our attention toward
the agreed-upon name for a particular example of furniture upon which people sit.
When we utter the sounds, or read the letters that symbolize the sounds, we will be
classifying the article, describing it, introducing it into our linguistic code. But the
name we give the article is not the thing itself, just as the letters “chair” are not
really the sounds we utter. As the philospher Ludwig Wittgenstein pointed out,
echoing many earlier observers, “The word is not the thing”; the word or name
merely symbolizes the thing.
