จะเห็นว่า antonyms ของ hot คือ cold และ antonyms ของ warm คอื cool
ลักษณะเด่นอีกประการหน่ึงของ gradable antonyms คือการมคี ณุ สมบัตทิ ่ีเรียก marked
และ unmarked ซ่ึงปรากฏใน antonyms หลายคู่ ใหน้ กั ศกึ ษาอา่ นขอ้ ความตอ่ ไปนี้

It is characteristic of many pairs of gradable antonyms that one of the pair is marked
and the other is unmarked. The unmarked member is the one used in questions of degree.
We ask “How high is it?” (not “How low is it?”) or “How tall is she?” (not “How short
is she?”). And we answer “One thousand feet high,” or “Five feet tall,” but never “Five
feet short,” except humourously.

เจาะจงเป็นเชิงตัดสินว่าสิ่งน้ัน “สูง” หรือ “เตี้ย” “ใหญ่” หรือ “เล็ก” เช่น ถ้าถามถึงขนาดของ
ตัวตึก จะถามว่า How high is the building? ถามถึงขนาดของคนจะถามว่า How tall is he?
หรอื ถามถึงขนาดของถนนจะถามว่า How wide is the road?

ในการตั้งค�ำถามเช่นน้ี ไม่ได้หมายความว่าผู้ถามได้ตัดสินลงไปแล้วว่าตึกน้ัน “สูง” หรือ
บุคคลผู้นั้น “สูง” หรือถนนสายนั้น “กว้าง” หากแต่เป็นการถามถึงขนาดตามธรรมดาท่ีเรียกว่า
