The historical Rattanakosin area, refered to as Rattanakosin Island, was established
as Thailand’s administrative center by King Rama I, the founder of the ruling Chakri
Dynasty.
Rattanakosin Island formed the original part of today’s greater Bangkok, comprising
the Grand Palace and the Wang Na or the Front Palace and perhaps the outer area of
Bangkok as well. Apart from the palace compound, the Rattanakosin Island also covers the
area bordered by canals. King Rama I commanded the excavation of a moat on the East
side from Wat Choeng Len towards Wat Sa Ket (originally called Wat Sakae) and Wat
Bang Lamphu. As this administrative center is encircled by he Chao Phraya River on both
sides, it is therefore called Rattanakosin Island.
