Albert Kaner loved good literature, but he couldn’t get his own children to read it.
They preferred comic books. In a desperate effort to interest his children and others, he
began the Classic Comic Books Company in 1970. The first comic book he published was
one of his own favorite stories, “The Three Musketeers,” by Alexandre Dumas. It was, to
his surprise, a success.

Soon to follow were other classic stories such as “Tom Sawyer,” “Romeo
and Juliet,” and “David Copperfield.” Their success was probably due to three factors: the
covers were bright and attractive, the stories exciting, and the writers kept the style of the
original books but made them readable for children.

All the books ended with a short reminder expressing hope that the reader would
be inspired enough to read the original book. The reader often was!
