(3) Consultative. In the middle, between frozen and intimate is the
consultative level. Most business letters. newspaper and magazine
articles, and reports are written in this style. Spoken consultation
typically involves an exchange of dialogue rather than a speech, but it
is the sort of exchange that takes place during business meetings, with
some attention to ceremony and rules of linguistic and social decorum7, 7. มรรยาททด่ี ี
rather than the exchange of casual friends. There is still, at this level, a งาม ความ
sense of hierarchy8: leaders and followers, dominant and subordinate, เหมาะสม

Slang and fad words are common here, but within a general framework
of standard speech patterns.

(4) Casual. The casual level appears in some written material, but
usually as flavoring in an otherwise consultative style. Mostly, this is a
spoken register carried on in an informal situation, between speakers of
equal or equivalent rank. The acquaintance of the speakers is not neces-
sarily close, but the behaviors are essentially sharing: comments on the
weather or sports in office hallways or on coffee breaks, in classrooms
before the bell rings, in elevators, cafeteria lines, air terminals. The
regional, ethnic and other dialects, slang and fad words here begin to
dominate the concern for correctness: pause markers (like “uh,” “you
know,” or “I mean”) begin to show up, too. Casual conversation can
occur in groups, but usually only if the group subdivides into two-or
three-person clusters.
