A word may have both denotative and connotative meanings. For example, the word
star at the literal level refers to something which shines in the sky at night. However, a
person may be called a star in which sense the word is a connotation. The author makes
use of the well-known characteristics of a star to suggest what that person is like without
having to say it directly.
Connotation involves all figures of speech such as simile and metaphor. It is a
popular and effective device since it enables the writer to suggest much more than what he
actually says. The sentence She is like a rose suggests much more about she than if it had
been written She is pretty or She is sweet. It is up to the reader to use his imagination and
come to the conclusion as to what she is like by thinking of the qualities of a rose and
attributing them to her.

ในประโยค (1) rose แปลว่า ดอกกุหลาบ ความหมายตรงตามตัวอักษร ไมม่ ผี ู้ใดจะเข้าใจ
เปน็ อืน่ สว่ นประโยค (2) จะเห็นว่า she ถกู เปรียบเทยี บวา่ เหมอื นดอกกหุ ลาบ ค�ำวา่ rose ใน
ประโยค (2) ไมไ่ ดห้ มายถงึ ดอกกหุ ลาบโดยตรง แตเ่ ปน็ การเอาคณุ ลกั ษณะของดอกกหุ ลาบไปใชใ้ น
การเปรียบเทียบ ผู้ท่ีรู้จักดอกกุหลาบก็จะเข้าใจได้เองว่า she ในประโยคน้ีน่าจะมีลักษณะเช่นไร
ประโยค (2) จงึ เป็นการใช้ค�ำในลักษณะของ connotation
(3) There is going to be a flood after this rain.
(4) The little girl let out a flood of tears.
คำ� ว่า flood ในประโยค (3) มีความหมายตรงตัววา่ นา้ํ ท่วม สว่ นในประโยค (4) flood
ใชใ้ นความหมายเปรยี บเทยี บใหเ้ หน็ วา่ นา้ํ ตาทไี่ หลออกมามปี รมิ าณมากราวกบั นาํ้ ทว่ ม การใชถ้ อ้ ยคำ�
ในเชงิ อุปมาอุปไมยเปน็ การสอ่ื ความหมายในระดับ connotation และเป็นที่นิยมใชก้ ันมาก เพราะ
