you would do this also, and would probably similarly pronounce the name Ngaio
Marsh, the mystery story writer. The reason for this is that in English no word may
begin with the ng sound. As children, when we learn English, we learn or discover
this fact about our language, just as Ghanaians learn that words may begin with the
ng sound.

1. Speakers of English have no difficulty pronouncing the name Nkrumah.

Knowledge of the sounds and sound patterns in one’s language
constitutes of our linguistic knowledge. The most important aspect of
knowing a language is knowing that certain sound or sound sequences
signify or represent concepts or “meanings”. Knowing a language is
therefore knowing the system which relates sounds and meaning. When
you don’t know a language, the sounds spoken to you in this foreign
tongue mean nothing to you. You can’t even figure out by any logical
or rational process what the speaker’s message is. This is because the
relationship between speech sounds and the meanings they represent is,
for the most part, an arbitrary1 relationship. You have to learn (when 1 ปราศจาก
you are acquiring the language) that the sounds represented by the เหตุผล ไม่มี
letters house (in the written form of the language) signify the concept ; กฎเกณฑ์
if you know French, this same concept is represented by maison; if you
know Twi, it is represented by Ɔdaŋ); if you know Russian, by dom; if
you know Spanish, by casa.
