The whole nation waited eagerly for the birth of the Royal baby, for their
Majesties’ first child, a girl, had been born in a foreign land while the King was pursuing
his studies in the United States, and the Thai people did not have the opportunity to share
in the excitement of the Royal birth. But the second child was going to be born on Thai
soil, and everyone shared in their Majesties’ hope that the second child would be a Prince
to ensure the continuity of the Chakri Dynasty.

The salvo of cannon that boomed at a quarter to six that evening could mean only
one thing: the Heir to the Throne was born. The birth caused much rejoicing, for it had
been nearly a century and a half since a son was born to the Queen of a ruling King.

The pinkish, tiny bundle of joy was given the name “Vajiralongkorn,” a
combination of the names of his two Royal ancestors — his greatuncle King Vajiravudh
and greatgrandfather King Chulalongkorn — which, translated literally, means “Decorated
with Lightning.” He would grow to be known as “Somdej Phra Barom Orojsathiraj
Chaofa Maha Vajiralongkorn Sayam-mongkut Rajakumarn” or His Royal Highness Crown
Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand, whose 33rd birthday is being celebrated today.
