Missing Bikes
Vienna - Vienna workers were hunting yesterday for hundreds of missing
bicycles made available to the public last week in the scheme to cut down on the use
of private transportation. The Vienna bike project lets cyclists borrow a bicycle for
2 euros (77 baht) from 240 special stands dotted around the city, and get their
two-euro coin back when they return the bike. But of the 900 of the distinctive pink-
and-blue cycles made available on Monday 7, some 400 were still missing yesterday.
“They are not really disappearing. They are being left in yards and student hostels,
and some of them are locked up so people can use them again,” said Michael Kuhn,
who is in charge of the bike hunt.

Sars threatens to become century’s first major disease

The sars virus, the fatal respiratory illness confounding doctors and researchers,
could become the first serious new disease of the century and reach pandemic proportions
in the world where people are constantly on the move. With the exception of Aids, most
of the worrying diseases that surfaced in the last century, like the Ebola virus, never
really posed a danger to public health at an international level.

This was mainly because transmission of the disease between humans was never
optimal or because those who fell ill were simply too sick to travel.
