21. The mountain people live in unity with nature. Herbs are their medicine. Spirits help
protect them from all dangers and difficulties.
22. Opium dealers come to the village on horse and carry sacks of opium down the
mountain to the destination unknown to the Akhas. Sometimes these dealers barter
opium for clothes, salt or other necessary items.
23. Meanwhile, the Akhas are visited by government officials, barefoot teachers and
border policemen who tell them about sanitation and the danger of smoking opium.
These people also teach the tribe to speak Thai and, fortunately, they have a school
built in the village itself.
24. Then an unprecedented great change has come to the mountain people.
25. On that very day, the King’s Mother or the Goddess from the Sky as they addressed
her with deep respect and gratitude came down a helicopter to visit them. At that time
there were no so called roads to access to these high mountainous areas. Yet, with
her came the warmth of blankets, the cure by medical doctors and the delicious sweets
for small children.
26. Their Goddess from the Sky made a frequent visit to all villages on these mountains.
She was interested in all activities: embroidering, weaving, silver work and even
colourful bead ornaments. She gave them a useful advice and supported them both in
the production process and marketing.
